What happened?

“Levada-center” asked the citizens of Russia, what historical events and phenomena cause them to have pride and some shame. Similar surveys have been conducted since 1999. This year, the sociologists polled 1,600 people in 137 localities in the period from 20 to 23 January.

On the first line consistently kept the victory in the great Patriotic war. This year it was voted 83% of respondents. “The return of Crimea to the Russian Federation” as a possible answer was included in the questionnaire for the first time. This option took place immediately after the victory in 1945 over the Crimea voted by 43% of respondents.

The least the Russians are proud of their freedom (10%), the Soviet classless society (9%), pursuits of Russian saints (7%), moral authority of the Russian intelligentsia (7%) and restructuring (4%).

2% of respondents said that none of this makes them proud of their country.

Regarding shame, “eternal poverty and disorder” was on the first place in the list. Ashamed that 54% of respondents.

Very few are ashamed of the “spirit of slavery” (8%), military defeats in the country (5%), the desire to impose by force their system on other Nations (4%), Putin came to power (3%) and “national pride” (3%).

8% of respondents said that none of the shame they did not cause.

And as it was before?

As we have noted, since 1999 a leading position among the “pride” had the victory in the great Patriotic war.

The first survey conducted by “Levada center” showed that Russians are more proud of:

with the country’s role in space exploration (60%)
achievements of domestic science (52%)
moral qualities of the Russian people (45%)
great travellers (33%)

Meanwhile, there was more and percentage of people who are ashamed of poverty and insecurity in the country (79% in 1999). Similarly, when the first survey was greater the percentage of citizens who were ashamed of the destruction of the Soviet Union (48%).

About the “Levada-center”

“Levada-center” – is a Russian non-governmental organization founded by sociologist Yuri Levada and directed on carrying out of sociological and marketing research.

According the Association of regional sociological centers “Group 7/89”, in 2015, “Levada-center” was in second position in the ranking of research companies.

In 2016, the Centre introduced in the register of noncommercial organizations performing functions of a foreign agent. The Ministry of justice has considered that the conduct of opinion polls, provide the public with the results and performances of representatives of the organization at seminars is a political activity.

Lev Gudkov, Director of the Center disagreed with this decision, saying that the organization intends to appeal.

At the moment, “Levada-center” continues to conduct and publish new surveys.

We surveyed 60 students to determine what events in the history of the country they are proud of, and which events and phenomena are ashamed. Answers were taken from the questionnaire “Levada-center”. And here are the results of this mini-survey were different.

None of the students was not ashamed of the destruction of the USSR.

What is happened?

14 December edition of Politico fired American journalist with Russian roots Julia Ioffe after speculation on Twitter that the US President-elect Donald Trump and his daughter Ivanka are in intimate relationships.

Joffe tweet was a reaction to news that the President’s daughter get an office in the White house, which was intended for his wife trump and the new first lady of the United States, Melania Trump. He was later removed. Despite the fact that the news was refuted by the press-Secretary of the Trump in the same source, which was referred to the journalist, her tweet was also on the same note – in an affirmative way: “Ivanka Trump get an office in the White house office of the first lady.”

Recall, usually in the White house, the Cabinet is given only for the first lady, for the rest of the family members of the President this is not provided.

How the media argued the dismissal?

After lighting news about Julia Ioffe tweet, Politico commented edition of the Daily Caller: “This tweet was completely unacceptable and is a violation of the standards of POLITICO. Julia Ioffe is no longer working with us.”

In addition, the journalist of The Washington Post Eric Wemple published in his Twitter a letter from the leadership of Politico, which argued that Politico journalists on all platforms are always a self publishing and have to do it properly. “We understand how outrageous it is to prevent such incidents, which discredit POLITICO… the letter reads. – … We will not tolerate such behavior.”

Joffe was about to resign from Politico to go into The Atlantic, and now the first edition has accelerated the process of transition, firing a journalist for two hours after the publication of the tweet.

What was the reaction of journalism?

After deleting the tweet Julia Ioffe wrote microblog “Our elected President popularized the tactic of “say what I think”, but I guess my wording should have been more sensitive.”

She later apologized in several tweets: “I’m sorry about my wording… It was a stupid joke, which I sincerely regret. It was tasteless, offensive tweet that I deleted and regret. I really and deeply sorry. It won’t happen again”.

Views

Kirsten powers, columnist for USA Today, defended Yulia in his microblog: “People should be left alone Julia Ioffe. She apologized, but of course, Twitter wants to have her burned at the stake. She’s a great journalist. Point.”

Ben Shapiro, a columnist of the Daily Wire, the lead of his show, expressed in his Twitter “I thought Julia Ioffe tweet was ridiculous. But then I thought that to fire someone because of this even more ridiculous.”

Lecturer at the faculty of communications, media and design HSE Yegor Isayev in exclusive comments to Hit.Media said: “the Blog is a private space, nobody has the right to influence the journalist (or any person) [is] how and what to speak.”

What Julia Ioffe is known for?

Joffe – American journalist, born in Moscow. At various times it was published in such periodicals as The Washington Post, The New Yorker, Forbes.

On Saturday, November 6, Baghdasaryan was detained by law enforcement agencies for gross violation of traffic regulations – Parking in the wrong place. Car girl parked on the sidewalk on Leninsky Prospekt and returned to him in that moment, when it wanted to evacuate.
